Otto Herman Museum

The museum was founded in 1899 under the name Borsod-Miskolczi Museum. Until 1914, the Borsod-Miskolczi Museum and Cultural Association financed its activities, and then until 1949, when it was nationalized, Borsod County and the city of Miskolc financed its activities. In 1953, the institution took on the name of the versatile scientist, Herman Ottó. In 1963, it became the center of the museum organization, and from that time its collection area extended to Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County.

The depositories of the Herman Ottó Museum contain nearly half a million individually registered artefacts. The largest collection is the archaeological collection, the outstanding units of which are the first objects of the Paleolithic, the finds of the Bük and Bodrogkeresztúr cultures of the Neolithic, and the representative works of art from the Migration Period and the Age of Conquest. The museum preserves the most complete domestic rock and mineral collection of the Carpathian Basin. The significance of the fine art collection - beyond the large number of works of art here - is primarily proven by the fact that it contains masterpieces by all the outstanding artists of Hungarian national painting, and with their help, our national painting can be presented from Mányok to Moholy Nagy. The historical collection contains rich industrial memorabilia, and a database of nearly half a million pages with written memorabilia from the 14th century to the present day is added to this. The internationally renowned part of the folklore collection is the folk art material of the Matyóság and Palóc folk groups. The Herman Ottó Museum can be found one of the largest rural numismatic-phaleristic collections.

The Herman Ottó Museum was declared a scientific research institution by the Ministry of Culture in 1985. The research results of the approximately 40 scientific staff and researchers affiliated with the institution are published in several regularly published periodicals. Planned purchases and exchanges ensure the regular growth of the museum library of approximately 200,000 volumes, which also includes the legacies of academics Béla Gunda and Imre Wellmann.

The Herman Ottó Museum was named Museum of the Year in Hungary in 1999, and the Miskolc city government awarded it the Pro Urbe award for the multifaceted work carried out by the institution. and high-level professional activity. Since 1997, the public collection has also been home to the Department of Cultural Heritage and Museology of the University of Miskolc.
